When I took this image, I felt small. Is that what we look like from outer space? As small as a fly in the sunset. Only, it’s not a sunset, it’s a wildfire, and it’s not a fly, it’s a helicopter. If anything is a good analogy for the human race, it’s a tiny basket of water suspended a hundred meters above a mountain of fire.

Shortly after this trip, the headlines read: “today, the hottest max. temperature for any September day on record has been recorded in Death Valley at 53 Celsius.”
